Weekend in Review: All hail the new, clear dawn

March 25, 2013

So, Lowell is Hockey East champions, having defeated Providence 2-1 on Friday in the semifinal and shut out BU 1-0 in the final. That was a pretty nice weekend, if we do say so ourselves.

In the other semifinal — which, who cares really? — BU beat BC 6-3 thanks to a big-time meltdown by Parker Milner.

Our Weekly Awards
Player of the Week
Connor Hellebuyck, Lowell (freshman goaltender) — Any time you go into the last two games of your league slate and allow one goal on 70 shots, that’s a pretty good couple days at the office, and honestly everything Hellebuyck has done since December has been noteworthy and amazing and confidence-inspiring in ways we never thought possible. We honestly can’t believe he’s only a freshman, and would very much like to echo the sentiments of Riley Wetmore, who said he seems like a senior. We can’t believe any of this happened. He’s so good, in fact, that we cannot for the life of us recall how Providence scored its one goal against him. We sat here thinking about it for five minutes and nope, nothing. It didn’t even matter.
(Honorable mention: Derek Arnold, Lowell; Scott Wilson, Lowell)

Rookie of the Week
AJ White, Lowell (freshman forward) — White may not have had many goals this season, he certainly made his latest count. With Lowell down a goal against Providence and looking for a way back into the game, White found himself the fortunate trailer on a netmouth scramble that allowed him to smash the puck into a mostly-empty net to give his teammates the feeling that Jon Gillies was indeed human, and very much solvable.
(Honorable mention: Christian Folin, Lowell; Greg Amlong, Lowell; Ryan McGrath, Lowell)

Ham n Egger of the Weak
BC — Never thought we’d see BC go down that easy against BU in a meaningful game, but when they started folding, they simply ripped in half instead. We know BC doesn’t have any goaltending behind Milner but that performance was bench-worthy in the biggest way. Just pathetic. Their first-round NCAA opponent might as well have a bye.
(Honorable mention: BU; Jack Parker)

Noteworthy Hockey East Weekly Awards
Connor Hellebuyck was named Player of the Week, Chad Ruhwedel was named Defensive Player of the Week, and Lowell was Team of the Week. Derek Arnold, AJ White and Scott Wilson were all Top Performers.
