Weekend in review: Two steps back

December 3, 2012

Lowell did about as well as you might have expected them to do this weekend, getting smothered in back-to-back 5-2 losses to UNH, the first Friday in Durham and the second back in Lowell. The good news is the River Hawks and Wildcats won’t play again until the playoffs, if Lowell makes it, which we don’t consider a certainty at this point.

Meanwhile, in a matchup of two top-10 teams, BC and BU split their rivalry weekend, with each winning their home game. The Terriers won 4-2 at Agganis on Friday before the Eagles earned a measure of revenge, and took the season series, 5-2 at the Heights the next night. Also Jerry York is a legend.

We can’t imagine why anyone would have cause to care about any of the other series that took place over the weekend. Northeastern and Amherst split, with each winning on the road. The Huskies won 1-0 at Amherst on Friday before getting crushed 6-3 on Saturday in the big city.

Merrimack and Providence also split and with both teams also winning on the road. The Friars pulled out a 3-2 overtime win on Friday, but lost 2-1 at Schneider the next night.

And finally, Maine and Vermont played what seem to have been the most boring two games of the season, with the Catamounts taking three points out of Orono behind a 2-1 Friday win and 2-2 draw on Saturday.

Our Weekly Awards
Player of the Week
Scott Wilson, Lowell (sophomore forward) — For better or worse, the kid who had one point in his first eight games of the season is now Lowell’s top scorer with 10 in 12 behind a three-point weekend that saw him set up 75 percent of Lowell’s goals. Hey, didn’t this team used to have two scoring lines?
(Honorable mention: Grayson Downing, UNH; Steve Buco, Lowell)

Rookie of the Week
Brody Hoffman, Vermont (freshman goaltender) — Only three goals against versus Maine in an entire weekend, at Orono no less. Doug Carr gave up five in Lowell to this same team.
(Honorable mention: Jon Gillies, Providence)

Ham n Egger of the Weak
Lowell — This team is in trouble.
(Honorable mention: Maine)

Noteworthy Hockey East Weekly Awards
Scott Wilson was a Top Performer.
