Weekend in review: There’s a bad moon on the rise

November 12, 2012

Well by now you are probably starting to wonder just how low it can go. Lowell has but one win in its five Hockey East games, four of which have been played at home. The latest results at Tsongas Center were, of course, a 2-1 win over Maine on Friday and a 4-3 loss to that same team Saturday. No good comes of splitting at home with the last place team in the league, except to say that at least Lowell isn’t now that team. Yet.

The list of teams that had far better results on the weekend begin, as you might expect these days, with Boston College, which took down both Notre Dame on Friday night at Conte Forum, 3-1, then went up Comm Ave. to Agganis Arena, where they played BU in a tighter-than-you-might-think 4-2 win. Nonetheless, BC has lost just one game this season, and that was their first of the year. BU also beat Merrimack 3-1 at Volpe.

UNH and Amherst, too, had good weekends, but only one game apiece in those. On Friday, the Minutemen humbled Providence 4-0 at Mullins Center, while the Wildcats handled Vermont at home (wonder what that’s like!) by the same score on Saturday.

In non-conference action, Northeastern swept Alabama-Huntsville, 3-0 Friday and 3-1 Saturday, and on the latter night, Merrimack lost to UConn, 3-1, in North Andover. So at least Lowell didn’t have the worst weekend.

Our Weekly Awards
Player of the Week
Riley Wetmore, Lowell (senior forward) — At least someone showed up this weekend. Two goals, while the rest of the team had three total, isn’t all that bad.
(Honorable mention: Johnny Gaudreau, BC)

Rookie of the Week
Matt Grzelcyk, Boston University (freshman defenseman) — A goal and two assists from the blue for BU this weekend is more than any Lowell freshman has all season. Well, AJ White’s at 0-3-3 in five games but we’d rather have the goal.
(Honorable mention: Michael Matheson, Boston College)

Ham n Egger of the Weak
Merrimack — Lost to UConn. Oh wait, this means they’re gonna make the NCAA tournament this year.
(Honorable mention: Lowell)

Noteworthy Hockey East Weekly Awards
Probably Riley Wetmore but it’s like 5 p.m. and Hockey East still hasn’t posted its weekly release so who cares?
