Weekend in review: We waited on the Beanpot results for some reason

February 2, 2010

Well Lowell continued its tradition of turning in a bad performance against an appreciably worse team and thus lost to Northeastern 2-1 on Friday. We don’t have much more to say on the matter.

Northeastern in turn lost to BU in the Beanpot, 2-1, just a few days after the Terriers curbstomped Amherst 6-2 at Agganis Arena. In the other Beanpot game, BC walloped Harvard 6-0 after having beaten Providence 5-2 at home on Friday. Amherst and Providence played each other the next night and the Minutemen prevailed 4-1.

In the two Hockey East series of the weekend, Maine took three points at Vermont with a dominant 6-3 win Friday and a 4-all draw on Saturday, while Merrimack edged UNH 3-2 at Volpe but fell at the Whitt in overtime 4-3 the next night.

Our Weekly Awards
Player of the Week
Chris Barton, Merrimack (junior forward) — Merrimack came thisclose to handing UNH its first league home defeat of the season, and broke up its run of something like 192 straight league games without a loss on Friday. Barton, who had four points, was the big reason why.
(Honorable mention: Carter Hutton, Lowell; Joe Cannata, Merrimack)

Rookie of the Week
Max Nicastro, BU (freshman defenseman) — Two points against Amherst. Great job, kid!
(Honorable mention: Steve Whitney, BC; The Daniels Twins, Northeastern)

Ham n Egger of the Weak
— Another crap performance against an easily beatable team. They’re piling up, and the River Hawks can only jam so many in the closet before they fly comically out upon its next opening like some sort of cartoon. Then we’ll have a real mess on our hands.
(Honorable mention: Vermont)

National Polls
We have to discontinue this part for now. We don’t know what’s going on with this HTML the last few weeks. You used to be able to C&P right outta USCHO and it wouldn’t look terrible. Now, it’s a disaster. No idea what changed but it sucks and we hate it.

Lowell’s 18th now, which should be just about right, if that’s what you’re wondering.

How we voted
For every home game, wants to know who your three stars of the game for the River Hawks are. All this voting is counted up and given as the Player of the Year award at the end of the season, so let’s take it super-seriously and just see if we can’t get those vote totals boosted this year, eh?

No home games, no voting.
