Weekend in review: Keep it movin’

February 10, 2009

Well Lowell did about as well as could have been expected at BU and obviously beat Amherst. That was the two points the ‘Hawks needed to keep pace with its competition for home ice: BC and UNH.

The Wildcats split with Maine at home, winning 4-1 at the Whitt on Friday but losing 1-0 in Manchester on Saturday.

The Eagles, of course, won their one game of the weekend, 2-0 over Amherst at home. They went on to beat Harvard in the Beanpot consolation game, 4-3 in overtime, meaning that BC will come into this weekend’s series 4-1-1 in their last six.

In other Beanpot-related action, BU beat Northeastern 5-2 in the final, just a few days after the Huskies beat Merrimack 4-3. Merrimack also shut out Brown 2-0 on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Vermont swept Providence in Burlington with a pair of 4-1 wins.

Interestingly, UMass Amherst is the only team to have lost a home game this weekend. Which is hilarious.

Our Weekly Awards
Player of the Week
Colin Wilson, BU (sophomore forward) — After a mediocre game against Lowell (just an assist) gave way to a monstrous Beanpot final in which he scored a shorthanded goal and added two assists. Kid’s huge. Unstoppable. Ready for the NHL right now. It’s almost not even fair.
(Honorable mention: Benn Ferreiro, BC; Viktor Stalberg, Vermont)

Rookie of the Week
Rob Madore, Vermont (freshman goalie) — Vermont needed four points against hard-charging Providence. Madore made 54 saves. That’ll do.
(Honorable mention: David Vallorani, Lowell; Steve Quailer, Northeastern)

Ham n Egger of the Weak
James Marcou, UMass Amherst (sophomore forward) — Oh yeah, the Minutemen’s big scary top-end talent. How’d he do this weekend? No points, minus-3. Right. Plus he got his lunch bagged, handed to him, taken away from him and eaten by Nick Schaus. Not like Amherst needed someone to step up this weekend. Hearin’ those Friar footsteps yet?
(Honorable mention: UMass Amherst; Don “Toot” Cahoon)
