Weekend in review: Movin’ on up

February 2, 2009

Thanks to an extraordinarily great result at Maine (a win!), Lowell earned two points and saw its season total improve to 18 in 17 games. Which, combined with BC’s fortuitious 2-2 draw with Providence, now has the River Hawks tied with the Eagles for fifth place in Hockey East, holding a game in hand.

They still, unfortunately, trail UNH by a point because the Wildcats just had to go and win on Friday 3-2 against previously dominant Vermont, which had lost just once in its previous eight games.

Meanwhile, BU downed Merrimack 3-1 in North Andover and, combined with Northeastern’s 6-4 loss to Amherst, edged closer to the top spot in the league. Merrimack went on to lose to Providence 5-3 the next night.

The only other result of the weekend was Amherst’s hilarious loss to Maine on Sunday, which keeps the Minutemen three points back of Lowell in seventh place. It was Maine’s first win since Dec. 13.

Our Weekly Awards
Player of the Week
Everyone on Lowell! — Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! A win at Maine! *confetti* *parade* Seriously, this was great to see.
(Honorable mention: Nick Mazzolini, Providence; Colin Wilson, BU)

Rookie of the Week
Blake Kessel, UNH (freshman defenseman) — Kessel scored the game-winner against Vermont with just over two minutes left on Friday. He may only have 4-4-8 this season, but he’s going to become one of the dominant defensemen in Hockey East by the time he’s done. Kid’s a player.
(Honorable mention: Matt Ferreira, Lowell; Casey Wellman, UMass Amherst)

Ham n Eggers of the Weak
UMass Amherst — It takes a special kind of team to beat the No. 1 team in Hockey East and then go up to Maine and get punked out by Dave Wilson.
(Dishonorable mention: Tim Whitehead, Maine; Vermont)
