Weekend in review: Not sure we get it

January 19, 2009

We find it very difficult to believe that despite this recent run of bad play, it is tied for sixth in Hockey East, just a point back of fifth, and five out of fourth. We cannot be certain what sort of Faustian deal the team has worked out to arrange such a fortunate position (considering where this team was a week ago) but we’re glad of it.

That 4-3 overtime win at BC on Friday was huge not only for the standings but for the psyche as well, and the understandable decision to rest Carter Hutton in favor of Nevin Hamilton and his historic dominance of UMass Amherst (career GAA of 1.8ish and sv% of.924), which beat Lowell 4-3 the following night, was probably all that kept this from being a four-point weekend.

Speaking of BC, their seven-game winless slide continued on Saturday with a 5-2 loss at BU. The Terriers had thumped Merrimack 4-1 on Friday and it could easily have been worse for the Warriors.

Providence continued its hot run, beating Amherst in a wild, back and forth contest that ended 5-4 before traveling up to Orono and drawing Maine 2-2. On Friday, the Black Bears had lost to freakin’ Bentley at home, 3-1.

In the only two-game Hockey East series of the weekend, Vermont and Northeastern split with a 3-1 decision going to the Huskies on Friday and the Catamounts winning 4-2 the following night.

UNH only had one game this weekend, an out-of-conference intrastate tilt with Dartmouth that ended 6-4 in the Wildcats’ favor, which, who cares?

Interestingly, it was a very bad week for home teams, which went 2-7-1 in 10 games.

Our Weekly Awards
Player of the Week
Maury Edwards, Lowell (sophomore defenseman) — Moe was absolutely dominant in these two games, scoring twice and adding an assist while finishing with five shots. That kid’s going to the NHL one day if he continues to mature at this rate.
(Honorable mention: Colin Wilson, BU; Viktor Stalberg, Vermont)

Rookie of the Week
Alex Beaudry, Providence (freshman goalie) — In three road games this week, Beaudry went 2-0-1 while facing 129 shots (an average of 43 per night). Somehow, he only allowed eight goals. That’s pretty damn incredible. But we hold grudges, so booooooooo, Alex Beaudry. Boooooo.
(Honorable mention: Matt Bergland, Providence; David Warsofsky, BU)

Ham n Eggers of the Weak
Maine — Oh man look who you lost to! We’ve seen some embarrassing results this year, but no Hockey East team should ever, under any circumstance, lose to Bentley. It just shouldn’t happen. That’s ridiculous.
(Dishonorable mention: BC’s 62.5 percent penalty kill)

How we voted
Last year, voting for the UMLHockey.com Player of the Game was very, umm, lax. Let’s not have that happen this year, eh? Go vote right now. What we’ll do is post our votes each week and then you can have something to copy because you know we know what we’re talking about.

1) Maury Edwards
2) Paul Worthington
3) Kory Falite
