Weekend in review: Sandy’s not the only thing wrecking our Monday
Well Lowell was swept by BC 1-0 at Tsongas Center Friday and 6-3 at Conte Forum Sunday. This was a worst-case scenario and frankly both games left a little too much to be desired than we were comfortable with.
But at least Lowell isn’t yet Maine. These Black Bears, who come to Lowell two weeks from now, continue to be perhaps the least-impressive Hockey East team since Merrimack was really and truly bad, having now lost to Providence 3-2 and 3-0 on the road. They have eight goals scored in seven games. Ouch.
Meanwhile, UNH and Northeastern played a pair of very odd games, with Huskies blowing a two-goal first-period lead on Friday in Durham and losing 4-3, then going back home and playing to a goalless draw. Merrimack, like UNH, also earned three points on the weekend, beating Vermont 6-3 Friday in North Andover, then drawing 2-all the next night.
Finally, BU (obviously) swept Amherst with wins of 5-2 in Boston and 3-2 in Amherst on Friday and Saturday night, respectively.
Our Weekly Awards
Player of the Week
Parker Milner, BC (senior goalie) — The Lowell Bump and all that. Look, we still don’t think he’s as good as Doug Carr (who was hung out to dry on Sunday), but when you’re stopping 63 of 66 shots on the weekend and we see every rotten second of it, then what are we supposed to do?
(Honorable mention: Johnny Gaudreau, BC)
Rookie of the Week
Ryan McGrath (freshman forward) — This was Lowell’s best player all weekend. He got the assist on Scott Wilson’s goal, but did all the work himself. He also drew a handful of penalties and looked very menacing. Can you believe this kid already has 16 shots this season?
(Honorable mention: Teddy Doherty, BC; Jon Gillies, Providence)
Ham n Egger of the Weak
Maine — Congratulations are in order for the team that now has two league goals in as many games. When your offense is so bad it makes Lowell’s look high-powered, maybe it’s time to just call it a season.
(Honorable mention: Lowell, Amherst)
